Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 20, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Dark Reader Ltd ("we", "us", "our") handles information in connection with typeof(dev) (the "Service"). We built the Service to collect as little as possible.
1. Who we are
The Service is operated by Dark Reader Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (Company No. 13594380), with its registered office at Office 40 Unit 5, 399–405 Oxford Street, London, W1C 2BU. For the personal data described in this policy, Dark Reader Ltd is the data controller. You can reach us at support@typeof.dev.
2. Information stored in your browser
typeof(dev) does not require an account to play. Your quiz progress, ranks,
chosen theme, daily usage counts, and $ sudo unlock status are stored
locally in your browser using localStorage; this
data stays on your device and is not sent to us. If you activate the $ sudo
unlock, your email address and activation code are also stored locally so the
app can recognize your unlock on this device, and may be sent to us to verify
it.
3. Email address
If you purchase the $ sudo unlock, we collect your email address so we can send you your activation link and messages related to your purchase (such as receipts or support replies). We generate an activation code and store it together with your email address in our database, so we can issue your unlock and verify it later. Your activation link is personal to you and must not be shared with anyone; sharing it may result in the unlock being revoked. We do not sell your email address, and we use it only to deliver and support your purchase and to contact you about the Service where necessary.
We send the activation link using a third-party email delivery provider, which processes basic delivery information (such as whether the email was delivered or bounced) as part of sending it. We do not use email open-tracking or link-click tracking on this message.
4. Payments
Payment for the $ sudo unlock is processed by a third-party payment provider (we may change providers from time to time). We do not collect or store your card number or full payment details; the provider processes your payment information under its own privacy policy. We may receive limited confirmation data (such as that a payment succeeded, and the email address used) in order to grant your unlock.
5. Advertisements
Free use of the Service may display advertisements. Depending on the ad provider, advertisers may use cookies or similar technologies to measure or personalize ads. Any such processing is governed by the relevant provider's privacy policy.
6. Analytics
We may collect limited information to understand how the Service is used — for example, the number of daily visits, the approximate country a visit comes from (derived from your IP address and/or your browser's time zone), your browser's language, and your browser type and user agent. We use this only to produce aggregate statistics (such as visitor numbers by country and which browsers are common). It is not used to identify you personally or to build an individual profile, and we do not use it to track you across other websites.
7. Server logs and technical data
When you use the Service, our hosting and infrastructure providers may automatically record technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages or files requested. We use this to operate and secure the Service, diagnose problems, and compile the aggregate usage statistics described above.
8. Legal bases for processing
Where UK or EU data protection law applies, we process personal data on the following legal bases:
- Performance of a contract — to deliver and support your $ sudo unlock;
- Legitimate interests — to operate and secure the Service, send transactional emails and process their delivery status, prevent fraud and abuse, and understand usage in aggregate, balanced against your rights;
- Consent — where required for certain advertising or analytics cookies, which you can withdraw at any time;
- Legal obligation — for example, to meet tax and accounting requirements relating to payments.
9. Who we share your data with
We do not sell your personal data. We share limited data with service providers that process it on our behalf, including: a payment provider to take payments; an email delivery provider to send your activation link and support messages; hosting and infrastructure providers that run the Service; and, where applicable, advertising and analytics providers. We can provide the names of our current providers on request. We may also disclose data where required by law, to enforce our Terms, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
10. International transfers
Some of our providers may process personal data in countries outside the UK or European Economic Area, including the United States. Where we transfer personal data internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses) as required by applicable law.
11. How long we keep your data
We keep your email address, activation code, and purchase records for as long as needed to provide and support the $ sudo unlock and to meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations, after which we delete or anonymize them. Data stored locally in your browser remains until you clear it.
12. Cookies and local storage
We use browser localStorage to remember your progress and
preferences as described above. This is essential to how the Service works.
You can clear it at any time through your browser settings, which will reset
your local progress and preferences.
13. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal data, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time (without affecting processing that already took place). Because your progress and preferences live in your browser, you can remove them yourself by clearing your browser storage. To exercise any right over data we hold (such as your email address), contact us at support@typeof.dev; we will respond within the time required by law. If you are in the UK or EU, you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office).
14. Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal data. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
15. Children's privacy
The Service is not directed to children under the age required by your local law to consent to online services, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes take effect when posted on this page, and the "Last updated" date above will reflect the revision.
