Terms of Service
Last updated: October 20, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of typeof(dev) (the "Service"), a programming challenge operated by Dark Reader Ltd ("we", "us", "our"). By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal data and forms part of these Terms.
1. The Service
typeof(dev) is a browser-based quiz about the sharp edges of several programming languages. It is provided for educational and entertainment purposes. We may add, change, or remove features, questions, or content at any time.
2. Eligibility
To use the Service you must be able to form a legally binding contract under the laws that apply to you. To purchase the $ sudo unlock you must be at least the age of majority in your place of residence, or have the consent of a parent or guardian, and you confirm that any payment method you use is your own and that you are authorized to use it.
3. No account required
You do not need to create an account to use the Service. Your progress, ranks, and preferences are stored locally in your browser and are not tied to a personal profile held by us.
4. $ sudo unlock and payments
The Service offers an optional paid unlock ("$ sudo") that removes limits on runs and explanations, hides ads, and unlocks additional themes. It is a one-time purchase, not a recurring subscription, and is granted to the browser you activate it in. Payments are processed by a third-party payment provider (we may change providers from time to time); we do not receive or store your full card details.
We send your unlock to you as an activation link at the email address you provide. This link is personal to you: you must not share, publish, or resell it, or the access it grants. We may revoke access that we reasonably believe was obtained or distributed through a shared activation link.
5. Taxes
The price of the $ sudo unlock is shown at checkout. Depending on your location, prices may be inclusive or exclusive of applicable taxes (such as VAT or sales tax). Any taxes shown at checkout are your responsibility.
6. Refunds
We offer a 14-day refund window on the $ sudo unlock. If you change your mind or are not satisfied, you may request a full refund within 14 days of your purchase by emailing support@typeof.dev, and we will refund the amount you paid to your original payment method. Once a refund is issued, your $ sudo unlock ends. This refund policy is in addition to, and does not limit, any statutory rights you have as a consumer.
If your unlock did not activate or you were charged in error, contact the same address at any time and we will put it right.
7. Availability of the Service
The $ sudo unlock buys access to the Service as it exists at the time of purchase. It is a one-time payment, not a subscription, and does not guarantee that the Service, or any particular feature, will remain available for any length of time. We may change, suspend, or discontinue the Service (in whole or in part) at any time, with or without notice. Except under the 14-day refund window described above, and because the unlock is not an ongoing subscription, changing or discontinuing the Service after your purchase does not, by itself, entitle you to a refund.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to misuse the Service. In particular, you will not:
- attempt to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorized access to the Service or its systems;
- reverse engineer, or systematically scrape, copy, or redistribute the Service's content (such as its question bank), except as permitted by law or by the sharing permission below;
- circumvent or attempt to circumvent usage limits, the ad gate, or the $ sudo unlock;
- use the Service in violation of any applicable law or regulation.
Sharing is welcome within reason: you may share your own results card, and you may post the occasional screenshot of a question for commentary, discussion, or to tell a friend. What is not allowed is reproducing the question bank in bulk or in a way that substitutes for the Service.
9. Intellectual property
The Service, including its questions, code snippets, design, and branding, is owned by Dark Reader Ltd or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. You are granted a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Service for its intended purpose.
10. Advertisements
Free use of the Service may be supported by advertisements. We are not responsible for the content of third-party ads or the websites they link to.
11. Disclaimer
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the content is accurate or complete.
The questions, code snippets, and explanations are provided for education and entertainment only and may contain errors or simplifications. You must not rely on them for professional, academic, or commercial decisions.
12. Limitation of liability
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability where it would be unlawful to do so. This includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and for any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law. Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer that cannot be waived.
Subject to the paragraph above, and to the maximum extent permitted by law: (a) we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, revenue, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of the Service; and (b) our total aggregate liability arising out of or related to the Service will not exceed the greater of (i) the total amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the liability, or (ii) GBP 50.
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Dark Reader Ltd and its officers, employees, and agents from any claims, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your misuse of the Service, your breach of these Terms, or your violation of any law or the rights of a third party. This does not apply to the extent a claim results from our own breach or negligence.
14. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, in whole or in part, if you breach these Terms, if we reasonably believe your activation link has been shared, or as needed to comply with law or to protect the Service or its users. You may stop using the Service at any time. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination — including intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law — will survive.
15. Governing law and disputes
These Terms, and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them or the Service, are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales will have exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you may also be entitled to bring proceedings in, and to the mandatory consumer protections of, your country of residence.
16. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes take effect when posted on this page, and the "Last updated" date above will reflect the revision. Your continued use of the Service after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
17. General
If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force. Our failure to enforce any right or provision is not a waiver of it. We may transfer or assign these Terms (for example, in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets); you may not transfer your rights under these Terms without our consent. These Terms are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service and supersede any prior agreements on the same subject.
